I guess I should give my father (the biological one) a phone call before Mrs. Flintstone blows ashore.

I suppose this hurricane season isn't complete without one more shot of Jim Cantore on tv being blown around like a hooker in front of a disintegrating Shoney's.

Heh... One wonders if these storms shold be headed for TX instead, since so many there are the ones who elected him governor in the first place. Send one right for the district that voted for DeLay as well... maybe spawn a tornado directly toward Karl Rove's house.

There is a growing contingent of people that think the recent weather is proof of weather modification from old Russian technology sold to the Japanese and they are using it as revenge for Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Sounds pretty crazy on the surface, but GEEZ. Look at this crap. Tropical Depression to Cat 5 in less than 24 hours. That has got to be some kind of record.

In case y'all are ready to take that step into conspiracy land, here is a good stepping stone. [Disclosure Notice: I am involved with the blog linked, not intended to be blog spam]

Yeah. From the little bit I read, ok I was fascinated by the whole unbelievability of it, the purpose isn't for hard targets per se, but rather to take us out via our economy. Enough damage and companies start to fail starting a chain reaction etc...

I for one would like to see the religious nutcases whether they are political involved or not, all driven towards the ocean and swept away. Kurt Vonnegut was on REALTIME with Bill Maher about a month ago and he made the comment that he really beleives that mother nature sees us humans as a plague on this planet, therefore, she is trying to get rid of us.. Makes sense to me.

I can all ready see the tv-movie-cartoon: "Mrs. Flinstone's back, and SHE'S PISSED." After years of abuse from that square-headed neandertal, Wilma is reincarnated as a hurricane. Starring: Kirk Cameron, Suzanne Pleshette, Dean Kane. LIFETIME 8pm, Oct 22
[info]theevilnub wrote:
Oct. 19th, 2005 04:50 pm (UTC)
Kirk Cameron would never appear in a movie title with the word "pissed" in it.

And Lifetime wouldn't air it unless there's a rape, an affair, or a family secret about an adopted baby involved... & the baby has breast cancer.

I dunno.... We've been noticing this hurricane season that Jim Cantore seems to be the go-to-guy when you want to be safe and out of the path of the hurricane. He consistently seems to be sent to the place that the eye misses. On the other hand, CNN's Rick Sanchez seems to have spot-on accuracy when it comes to landing the big blow. And he looks mighty fine in a wet black t-shirt too :P

This line of work is perfect for Rick Sanchez. He was the head anchor for WSVN-7 in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale & both me & my parents easily avoided his sensationalist newscasts. Couldn't stand him then, can't stand him now. Of course, when Hurricane Andrew hit in August 1992, poor Ricky was crouched like a bitch in a dark closet at the news studio & his trying-to-be-brave persona was unconvincing.

It's funny though... I've seen a lot of newscasters I grew up with in S. Florida make it to the networks over the years.

Sometimes when I'm in the gym I can't escape it (unless I want to wheel the LifeCycle away from the TV monitors). At the very least I try to take the bike that's the farthest away from any tv set on FauXNews. I mean, on one hand, the idiotic things broadcast there get my blood boiling & make me pedal faster... but the added stress makes the cardio a zero-sum game.

I agree with you. One reason why I don't watch TV as much anymore. FOX NEWS is PROPAGANDA MACHINE for the radical right. I work out at home anyway. Been lifting for almost 2 months now to vent my anger from the stresses of the shop. Seems to help. The chest pains aren't as frequent plus i feel much much stronger.

hehehe, the only beefy guy that would do that is my partner...and his idea of stress relief is getting laid OR lighting up. He's never hit weights in his life. I started doing this shit when I was engaged to my then ex-fiance, then met him and stopped. Like I said, the only reason I'm doing this shit now is becuase I need to take a form of anger management, and reduce my stress level (becuase of the chest pains). The ideal thing thing would be is for me to get completely out of the field I work in and I will in time.

I've been doing it for 7 years J. I've had enough. It is a very tough field to work in. I'm glad that I know what I know and I've made many connections over the years and know exactly what to look for in a car. I advise people on what to buy and what NOT to get.

My dad retired from his business of auto & boat restoration during the past year or two. He sold his law practice in the early-90s to start his business, but he worked his way through college being a mechanic & it was always in his blood. He has a particular affinity for mid-60s German cars, diesel or not. Last month I did a journal entry about his "fleet":

RESPONSE....
it was always in my blood J, that's not the issue. It's just that the job is seriously starting to affect my health. Out of all the vehicles you have listed, my personal favorite is the truck. Prefer Dodges to tell you the truth. And I know what you're gonna say about Dodges....Transmission issues, I know all about em. I own only one and I'm not sure if I'm gonna invest in another Chrysler product ever again. But get used to it, transmission issues are gonna be the new headaches of the future with cars rolling outta the assembly lines and Chrysler's leading the charge on that one.
In one shop I was in, I learned in detail as to how a transmission works. The two cars that I worked on most of the time were either Chryslers OR Fords. And you wanna know why that is? Because ever since electronics became more increasingly used in vehicles, diagnosing a problem was easier to do. in some cases they were right, but now you gotta another problem. Instead of the engines dying before the auto-trannies dying you got it the other way around. Instead of the old way (where the transmission valve body relied on vacuum lines & valves from the engine to determine when to shift) the new way is where you gotta computer (telling a series of switches on top of the valve body) along with a series of sensors telling the trannie when to shift. In other words the trannies' gotta brain and thinks. That's great, makes it more reliable and more fuel efficient. But when they die, the vehicle refuses to move. I know becuase I did mine and I paid $900 for the parts, and if the labor were included it would be about $700 give or take. Wait till i tell you what they are doing to engines.......heheheheh

So much for progress. Instead of replacing a metal part people now have to replace a computer chip &/or sensor, which in & of itself, seems guaranteed to cost more than some metal part. While computer diagnostics make it easier to find the problem (though, tell that to people who still keep going back again & again for the same issues on their modern vehicles), once it's located, it's more expensive to fix. I used to have an '87 Honda Accord LXi hatchback when I was in college; I put 180,000 miles on it in 5 years. At about year 4, the oxygen sensor went. It was the second most-expensive repair I had paid for on that car (the MOST expensive was the a/c compressor, which I remember was more than $700).

It doesn't surprise me about the Fords & the Mopars with the transmission issues. Fords also used to have major issues with their engine starters (especially on vehicles around 1988-93) & I don't think they really got a hold of the problem until the late-90s. There's a reason why Ford stands for Fix Or Repair Daily. Sometimes I can walk throug a parking lot & hear a vehicle start & based on a certain sound it makes, I can tell if it's a Ford or a Honda. I've been able to tell the sound of a late-model Subaru engine approaching from behind without looking. Or the sound of a V6 from a well-worn GM car from the mid-early 90s.

I had one person ask me many months ago if I was a GM, Ford, or DC guy. My answer is none of the above, actually. I have no brand loyalty. But if I had to pick elements of those 3 I'd pick the automatic transmissions of GM, the exterior design ambition of DC, & the interior design of Ford.

the issues with Chrysler trannies are the solenoid packs. It's just bad design. And the Fords still have starter issues. A month ago I was working on a 2000 Expedition that refused to crank over and I had to replace the starter and the starter solenoid which was seperately mounted on the back on the engine firewall.
